Our first experience of standby flights proved a great success. Keren was greeted at the special staff desk by someone with whom she had worked and this lady was immediately able to allocate us seats and fast-track us through part of the check-in procedure.
The flight was quite crowded but we arrived in Singapore at 7.00 p.m. the following day having managed to get a short sleep on the way.
We took a taxi from the airport to the Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel (1) which we'd booked via Expedia just the day before flying out of Heathrow. Unfortunately the hotel seemed unable to find our booking but as they upgraded us to their Executive Superior room we were not too worried - provided our credit card doesn't show a double charge!

Having been to Singapore before, we were not desperate to go sightseeing but we did end up the next day walking a long way following the river through the principal part of the city. We also visited the Asian Civilisation Museum.
In the evening we flew to Darwin (having spent several hours at Singapore airport using their free internet facilities).
